4.3 LAN Network Topology

Network construction or design is the way in which computers, wires, and other
components are connected to form the network. Local Area Networks (LANs) are
divided into three designs:
❖ Bus Topology
❖ Ring Topology
❖ Star Topology
4.3.1 Bus Topology
In this design, computers are connected in a row along a single cable, where this cable
connects each computer to the one following it .
One drawback of this structure is that if more than one device sends data at the same
time, a phenomenon called collision occurs. Each computer must wait for its turn to
send data. As the number of devices increases, the time each device takes to send its
data also increases, leading to network slowdown. Additionally, if there is a break in
any part of the network, the entire network stops functioning.
