11 The Internet

The Internet is a giant computer network, specifically a Wide Area Network (WAN),
consisting of a collection of networks and computers, each containing vast amounts
of information. The Internet is often referred to as the network of networks and is
also known as the information superhighway.
The Internet originated in 1969 in the United States to support military research and
was initially named ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency). At that time,
ARPANET consisted of four large computers distributed among universities and
research centers. Over the years, ARPANET evolved several times, eventually
transforming into the Internet as we know it today—a network connecting
     distributed computers worldwide.

    11.1Basic Internet Terms

The Internet community consists of various common entities, including individuals,
organizations, computer companies, institutions, governments, and anyone with a
connection to the Internet in one way or another. Here is a simplified description of
     each of these categories:
      • Internet Service Providers (ISPs):
These are companies operating in the field of communications that connect to the
main Internet infrastructure through submarine cables. They have connection points
distributed across cities and villages, enabling them to connect users to the Internet.
      ● Internet Content Providers:
Any individual or entity that provides content on the Internet, whether through web
pages or audio-visual content on social media platforms.
