9 Network Software Components
Alongside the hardware requirements, networks require software requirements for
the operation and configuration of computer devices and auxiliary equipment, such
as:
• Network operating systems.
• Drivers for network interface cards and connecting devices, along with
their configurations.
• Data transmission software (applications, services, and protocols).
• Software for network security and protection.
• Software supporting network monitoring and maintenance.
• System properties, such as device name and IP address.
9.1 Operating Systems
The network operating system is a specialized operating system designed to manage
and operate network resources such as servers, routers, and switches. Some of the
most common network operating systems include:
A. Windows Server: This is the server operating system developed by
Microsoft, designed to run servers and manage network resources. It
includes features such as file and print sharing, and web services.
B. Linux: An open-source operating system widely used for servers and
networks. Linux is known for its high customizability and can be configured
to run on a variety of hardware platforms. It includes a wide range of
networking features, including built-in support for network protocols such
as TCP/IP and FTP.
C. macOS Server: Apple's server operating system designed to run on Mac
hardware. It includes features such as file sharing, backup using Time
Machine, and network services.
D. Novell NetWare: A legacy network operating system that was popular in
the 1990s and had features for file and print sharing.
