6.5 Captions

Captions are text below illustrations (such as pictures and tables) that help identify the item.
Microsoft Word provides functionality to automatically generate updated numbers for
figures and tables. Numbering and links can be updated automatically when you add, move,
            or delete a shape.

           6.5.1 Insert Caption

1- Select the picture you want to add a caption to. Click References > Insert Caption.
2- To use the default label (Figure), type your caption in the Caption box.
3- If you want to modify the description, add a new description that is not in the drop-

down list, or change the numbering method, etc., this is done through the Caption
                     dialog box.

          6.5.2 Insert Table of Figures

This feature helps you create and update a list of captions for pictures, charts, graphs, or other document
           illustrations, and their page numbers.

            6.5.4 Cross-reference

A cross-reference allows you to link to other parts of the same document. For example, you
might use a cross-reference to link to a chart or graphic that appears elsewhere in the
document. The cross-reference appears as a link that takes the reader to the referenced item.

For example, you could write "See page 15," "In Chapter 4," or "In Exhibit 6." The reader
can click on the cross-reference link to view the information referenced by the author (they
act as hyperlinks). On the other hand (unlike hyperlinks), when you edit a document, if its
structure changes (for example, if page numbering changes or Chapter 3 becomes Chapter 4),
the cross-reference text is automatically updated. To insert a cross-reference, do the
            following:

1- Place the cursor where you want to insert the cross-reference.
2- References tab > Captions group > Cross Reference
3- In the Cross Reference dialog box in the Reference Type list, select the reference type

you want to link to, for example, choose the Reference Type Title as shown in the
                   figure.
4- Select the title to which you want to attribute the reference, then click Insert.
