           ● Remember: Section summary
           • Key idea: AI is a broad field, while an AI system performs a specific task.
           • Practical decision: Distinguish among the algorithm, model, system, data, and interface
           before evaluating the result.

           • Mistake to avoid: Reducing AI to a chatbot or to machine learning, or treating
persuasive language as evidence of consciousness and understanding.

1.3 Types of Tasks Performed by AI

◆ Key idea: Begin by defining the output you need.

Instead of beginning with the tool’s name, begin with a question: what output do I need?
Is it a classification, a predicted number, a ranked list, information extracted from an image
or audio recording, new content, a plan, or a recommendation? This question helps you

choose an appropriate tool and understand how to evaluate it.

Classification places an input into a category, such as “urgent/not urgent” or

“sales/support.” Forecasting produces a number or future estimate, such as demand volume
or delivery time. Both are predictive tasks, but their success is measured differently.

Ranking and recommendation produce an ordered list based on relevance. Perception
converts images or audio into usable information, such as turning a recording into text.

Generation creates new text, images, audio, video, or computer code.
Optimization and planning seek a plan that achieves an objective under constraints, such as
scheduling teams or allocating resources. Decision support connects analysis to a practical
