12.7 Important Protocols in the Internet Model

The steps of sending data from one device to another in a network are similar to
sending a letter through postal mail:Hypertext Transfer Protocol HTTP
      • Dynamic Host configuration Protocol DHCP
      • Domain Name System DNS
      • File Transfer Protocol FTP
      • IMAP
     12.7.1HTTP
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is a system for transferring information on the
Internet through the World Wide Web (WWW). It is the primary and most widely
used method for data transfer on the web. The main goal of building HTTP was to
publish HTML pages through a web server and receive them by the browser.
     This protocol operates as follows:
      • The browser sends a request to the server to send the page to be opened.
      • The server receives the request and responds with a message consisting of several

parts. This message is then directed back to the client device, reaching the
browser. The browser, in turn, understands and displays it to the user.
