UTP Cable Categories:
There are several categories for UTP cables as follows, and these categories support
different speeds and lengths:
• Cat1: This category is used for voice transmission only and is not used for data
transmission.
• Cat2: This category is used for data transmission at speeds up to 4
megabits/second.
• Cat3: This category is used for data transmission at speeds up to 10
megabits/second.
• Cat4: This category is used for data transmission at speeds up to 16
megabits/second.
• Cat5: This category is used for data transmission at speeds up to 100
megabits/second.
• Cat5e: This category is used for data transmission at speeds up to 1000
megabits/second, depending on the wire length.
• Cat6: This category is used for data transmission at speeds up to 5 gigabits per
second for short distances.
• Cat6A: This category is used for data transmission at speeds up to 10
gigabits/second up to 100 meters.
• Cat8: This category is used for data transmission at speeds up to 25 to 40
gigabits/second.
