Computer Classifications
Computers have come a long way since the first computers were introduced in
the 1940s. From the large, mainframe computers of that era to the small,
handheld devices of today, there have been many technological advancements.
Computers can be classified into four main categories based on their use, size,
handling capabilities, and architecture.
Classification by use
• General-purpose computers are designed to perform a variety of tasks and
can be used by a wide range of users. These include most personal
computers (PCs), desktop computers, laptops, and tablets.
• Special-purpose computers are designed for a specific task or set of tasks
and cannot perform general-purpose tasks. These include routers, ATMs,
gaming consoles, vending machines, robotic vacuum cleaners, and washing
machines.
