P. 23
Chapter Objectives
▪ Distinguish artificial intelligence as a broad field from a specific AI system designed to
perform a task.
▪ Understand the relationship among artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning,
and generative AI.
▪ Recognize, at an introductory level, rule-based systems, systems that learn from data, and
systems that combine both approaches.
▪ Identify the main types of tasks AI can support, including classification, forecasting, ranking,
generation, and decision support.
▪ Understand the difference between training a model, using it after training, and testing it
on new examples.
▪ Develop a simple understanding of how language models construct sentences and why
they can produce a convincing but incorrect answer.
▪ Determine what AI can accelerate or improve and what should remain under human
review and responsibility.
◆ Key idea: AI is a specialized tool, not a mind that knows the truth.
Artificial intelligence is neither a single product nor a single way of working. It is a field that
includes systems based on explicit rules, systems that learn from data, and systems that
combine both approaches. AI is most useful when the task is clearly defined, the result can
be checked, and people remain involved in setting the objective and interpreting the
output.
Video: AlphaGo: The Movie
A documentary about the system’s
development and its match with Lee Sedol. It
shows how a machine can excel in a narrow
domain without possessing general human
intelligence.
Duration: about 90 minutes | Level: General
Learning objective: Distinguish specialized
performance from general intelligence and
relate performance to context, objective, and
training.
