11.4Network File System (NFS)
It is a protocol developed by Sun Microsystems in 1984, used in client-server
networks where devices on the local network can share resources and data among
themselves. This is achieved by storing data on the server and retrieving it based on
the client's request. The server verifies the request and provides the necessary data
to the client. This protocol is used with operating systems such as Apple Mac OS, Unix,
and Unix-like operating systems such as Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD, and AIX. On the other
hand, Sun developed protocols that perform similar functions to Microsoft's SMB
(Server Message Block) for the Windows operating system.
