Advantages of distance education
▪ Flexibility: Distance education achieves flexibility in place and time, unlike
traditional education, which is characterized by a fixed place and time of learning.
▪ time-saving: It saves time, effort, and financial costs for the parties to the educational
process. In contrast, traditional education requires more effort, cost, and time.
▪ Ease: It facilitates learning, especially for those with special needs who are unable
to move around, and the age group of adult learners, while in traditional education
they may find it difficult to be present within the educational institution because of
the inability to move around and commit to work.
▪ Communication: Provides the possibility of communicating in different ways
between parties of the educational process through the programs and applications
used.
▪ lower price or cheaper: Thanks to the nature of digital learning in continuous
development, the cost of education has become lower. Educational degrees and
certificates that can be obtained online have become common, and there are
accredited universities that exist only on the Internet and were able to overcome the
obstacle of high infrastructure costs and began directly in the educational process,
such as the Open University in England.
▪ Expanding your social network: Distance learning is a golden opportunity for
students and teachers to expand their network of social relationships, as this helps
them get to know new friends from different cultures and countries, which has a
positive impact on them in expanding the scope of their experiences. It is noted that
watching educational conferences and interacting with them, the spirit of cooperation
and participation is enhanced.
▪ Global reach: Distance education allows access to a wide range of educational
materials and knowledge, which can be unavailable in specific countries or certain
regions.
The most important challenges facing distance education:
Distance learning faces several challenges, including the following.
- Some educational subjects and branches are not compatible with the distance
learning method: for example, drawing cannot be learned via the Internet; You must
learn to hold a pen or brush and learn how to move your wrist. The same applies to
engineering drawing, and all of that is not possible through distance learning. Also,
studying physical education cannot be done without attending lessons, even though
there have been many attempts to reduce that gap.
