↻ Exercise 3: Screen sources with recorded reasons
Goal: Apply criteria consistently rather than by impression.
Required: At least twenty records from Exercise 2. Allow about 60 minutes.
Steps: Write the inclusion and exclusion criteria before looking at any record. Screen the
titles and abstracts against them. Record a decision and a reason for every record. Have a
second person screen a sample independently. Then record the disagreements and how
they were resolved.
Output: A screening table with a decision for each record and two notes on
disagreements.
Assessment criterion: Every exclusion carries a stated reason, and the criteria were not
changed after seeing which records they excluded.
↻ Exercise 4: Build a miniature evidence map and one synthesis
Goal: Move from summarizing single studies to a judgment about a body of evidence.
Required: Three to five included sources. Allow about 60 minutes.
Steps: Extract from each source the design, the population, the measure, the finding, and
the limitation, with the location of each in the source. Place them side by side. Mark
where they agree, where they differ, and what none of them answers. Then write two
paragraphs stating what can be said and with how much confidence.
Output: An evidence matrix and two synthesis paragraphs.
Assessment criterion: No claim appears without a source, and no judgment exceeds what
the sample and the design support.
↻ Exercise 5: Verify suspect references
Goal: Separate the existence of a reference from its support for the sentence that cites it.
Required: Five references from a draft, including at least two you did not select yourself.
Allow about 45 minutes.
Steps: Open the publisher page for each reference. Match the title, the authors, the year,
and the journal field by field. Resolve the identifier and confirm that it returns the same
source. Read the passage that is supposed to support the claim. Then check for a
correction or a retraction.
Output: A reference passport for each of the five sources.
Assessment criterion: The passport distinguishes a reference that exists from a reference
that supports the sentence. An identifier that resolves is not on its own a pass.
↻ Exercise 6: Create a usage log and a disclosure statement
Goal: Make the use of the tool inspectable by a reader.
Required: A piece of work in which you used AI. Allow about 40 minutes.
Steps: Record for each use the tool, the version or the date, the stage of the work, the
nature of the inputs, and how a person verified the output. Remove anything confidential
from the record. Then write a disclosure proportionate to the effect the tool had on the
work.
Output: A usage log and a short disclosure statement.
