• Key idea: AI-assisted analysis needs testing of the code, the method, the interpretation,
and the privacy.
• Practical decision: Keep the original data separate, and use a dictionary, small tests, and
a complete log.
• Mistake to avoid: Equating running code with correct code, or using generated outputs
as real data.
7.8 Writing Reviews, Research Abstracts, and Policy Briefs
◆ Key idea: every claim needs a path to evidence.
Evidence-based writing is not a linguistic polish applied after the research is finished. It is
a way of displaying the relationship between the question, the method, the finding, the
source, and the limits. AI can support planning and editing, but it must not create claims,
references, or certainty that do not exist.
The function of a text differs with its audience. An academic paper explains the method and
allows the evidence to be appraised and the work repeated. A literature review builds an
argument about the state of knowledge. An institutional report connects findings to an
operational question or a decision. A policy brief condenses evidence, options, and
implications for a busy audience. It is not enough to change the length or the tone; the
structure, the type of detail, and what the reader needs in order to take a position must
change.
The claim, evidence, and reasoning structure is useful. The claim is the sentence we want
the reader to accept. The evidence is the data or the sources that support it. The reasoning
explains why the evidence justifies the claim in this context. Many generated texts produce
a claim and a reasoning with no real evidence, or place a reference beside a sentence it does
not support.
In the introduction, a tool can help test the logic: does the text move from context to
problem to gap to question? But it may inflate the importance of the topic with general
phrases such as “it has become more necessary than ever”. It is better to show importance
through data, consequences, or a decision, not through adjectives. And a gap is not
established by saying “there is a shortage”; it is established by showing what the literature
has covered and what remains.
In the method section, a tool can turn notes into a structure, but you must describe what
actually happened rather than what should have happened. State the design, the sample,
the instrument, the procedure, the analysis, the software, the versions, and the
amendments. If AI was used in conducting the study or the analysis, editorial guidance
