imagining retrieval, but it can wrongly suggest that memories are fixed and unchanging.
When the teacher states the limits of the analogy, it turns from decoration into a tool for
thinking.
Diagnostic questions matter more than more explanation. After each main idea, ask the
learner to predict a result, explain a cause, choose between two alternatives, or find the
error in an example. The answer does not only measure recall; it helps identify the type of
gap. A learner who repeats a definition but cannot interpret a new case needs different
support from a learner who got a single term wrong.
A tool can support Socratic dialogue by asking one question at a time, waiting for the
learner’s answer, and then choosing the next question based on what emerged. But it must
be prevented from turning quickly into a long lecture or a complete solution. Teaching
through dialogue does not mean flooding the learner with questions; it means choosing the
question that moves the thinking one reasonable step forward.
In subjects that involve procedures or problems, worked examples help when they show
why each step was taken, not when they display a silent chain of calculations. Steps can then
be faded gradually until the learner moves from watching to independence. AI can generate
multiple versions, but the correctness of each solution and the gradient of difficulty must be
reviewed.
For abstract concepts, multiple representations help: a verbal definition, a diagram, a table,
a real example, and perhaps a simulation. The aim is not to repeat the content in four forms,
but for each representation to reveal a different aspect. A diagram shows relationships, a
table supports comparison, an example ties meaning to context, and the verbal explanation
fixes the terminology.
We should not confuse simplification with impoverishment. A simple text preserves the
central idea, the conditions, and the boundaries while reducing unnecessary complexity.
Impoverishment removes what makes the idea correct. The quality of a simplification can be
tested with two questions: can the learner use it in a new situation? And will they later have
to unlearn a wrong idea acquired from the simplified explanation?
6.2.1 Steps for Building a Teaching Explanation with AI
1. Define the precise concept and the learning outcome: definition, explanation,
comparison, application, or critique.
2. Write what you expect the learner to know before starting, and the common errors or
confusing vocabulary.
3. Ask for a short explanation of the central idea, then the core relationships, instead of a
complete essay at once.
