FIGURE 4-7: THE SIFT METHOD FOR VERIFYING INFORMATION AND SOURCES
What to notice: The method does not ask you to analyze every page in detail. It pushes you
to stop, check the source, look for better coverage, and trace the original.
Source: Prepared by the author, drawing on the SIFT moves and civic online reasoning
research [8][17].

↻ Try it yourself: turn an answer into checkable claims
Take three claims from a single answer: a figure, the name of a source, and a
recommendation. Build a four-column table: the claim, the primary source, the
independent source, and the decision. Do not edit the text before finishing the table.
● Remember: Section summary
• Key idea: Verification turns text into claims, then ties each claim to appropriate and
current evidence.
• Practical decision: Use a primary source and lateral reading, and record the status of
every claim.
• Mistake to avoid: Settling for the fact that a link exists, or that a source looks official
from its page design.
